I've been travelling in Japan for over 15 years, but never as a regular tourist. I've been lucky to have met a lot of Japanese musicians, and I've toured with bands and on my own playing shows around Tokyo, Osaka, and elsewhere. In March 2007 I went with a drummer for a short tour, and took more photos than usual after buying a brand new camera in the shops in Tokyo. Here, then, are a few pages with a selection of photos, focusing on places and things that tourists wouldn't necessarily stumble on or notice. Enjoy. I'll add more later, perhaps including one emphasizing the shows and bands that we played with this time.

A house that some friends live in. You wouldn't think this is in the midst of a Tokyo neighborhood, but it's one of those cases where old buildings and new rub shoulders. A 10 or 15-minute walk from a train station, it's a quiet, peaceful area that doesn't feel like it's in the midst of Tokyo.

A simple neighborhood street scene, near the house shown above. Away from the big neon-lit boulevards that are usually shown, you'll find narrow little streets where two cars can't pass each other without one pulling out of the way.

Sitting on a train one afternoon I found the two-level view interesting. People go about their business above on the platform, while down below cargo is being towed.

It's actually difficult to think of favorite things about Japan, because it's really the overall feel of the place more than anything specific! Since the first time I went there, in 1992, I was struck by how different-yet-the-same it is. Since I've always gone under the auspices of musician and record label friends, I think I have a very different view from most people who visit, but overall I've found everyone to be incredibly nice. Very dedicated to what they're doing, serious even when having fun. And the combination of old and new in Tokyo is fascinating. It's enjoyable, for me, to simply walk around any random neighborhood and look around, see what I find. Reply...
