Guys, I am going to keep this nice
and simple for you. When you have a date lined up, put a little effort into
looking good. First impressions are absolutely lasting impressions, so make
sure to pay attention to even the smallest details.
For a casual yet hip look, I like to
suggest grabbing a sexy pair of jeans that hug you right. I like brands like “7
for all mankind” and their “Manhattan Slouchy” jeans or “Rock & Republic”
and their “Henley Fugitive” fit. Hit a store like Neiman Marcus for the
ultimate selection of styles and colors of denim.
Now that you have your sexy jeans,
get a great solid colored shirt with a unique blend of materials. A shirt like
a Burberry solid light blue herringbone pairs great with your jeans. This shirt
is also very versatile and looks good tucked in or out. Pair your shirt and
jeans with a great jacket. You could go for a very sleek look with an “Etro”
duster jacket or a "Ermenegildo Zegna" “Mitch” jacket. The look behind this is
casual yet thought-out and with a true attention to beautifully stitched
garments. Make sure you have a good solid black and brown belt to pair with
your outfits.
The shoe I
tell every guy I know to buy that is awesome with jeans and slacks are
“drivers” (comfortable, sophisticated loafers). You could get a pair of black
Salvatore Ferregamo leather “Runner Loafers” and be able to use them for date
outfits with jeans or even wear them on casual Friday’s at work. High-end
brands like Tods and Gucci also make gorgeous suede drivers in rich chocolate
browns or luxurious black as well. For those who don’t want to spend a few
hundred on shoes, head to Kenneth Cole and pick up a pair of brown
“Moc-A-Thon”, which are nice suede loafers available for $175.00.
Always make
sure to spray waterproof protectant on your suede items. You can typically buy
the spray at the shoe boutique or have your local cobbler assist you. Also,
make sure to wear the appropriate thin dress socks with your shoes. I have
heard disaster stories and seen guys out about wearing athletic socks with
dress shoes. This is a huge NO NO.
Now that you have a nice
date outfit, make sure you groom yourself properly. Guys this means, shower and
shave. On shaving, I would say make sure you use a new blade. Razor burn is
often caused by one of two things: bacteria that grow on your blade after use,
or a dull blade from previous shaves. On date night, pull out a fresh, new
blade.
After shaving, please
moisturize. Most men don’t do that ever, so they wouldn’t think about doing it
for a date. I liken it to waxing your car. You don’t wax your car every time
you wash it, but you do when you want your car looking its best. Splash some
nice aftershave on as well.
Haven’t pulled out your
tweezers in a year? Well, pluck your uni-brow if you have one or any wild stray
hairs. Trim your nose-hairs too. These are the worst things to talk about, but
they are also the most unbecoming examples of sub-par grooming.
Make sure your hair is
groomed and you paid a visit to have the back of your neck shaved. Women really
don’t like neck hairs everywhere. Even if you had your hair cut two weeks ago,
you can simply go in for a neck shave. It is worth the extra dollars trust me.
Make sure your wallet is
loaded with plenty of cash for cabs and two credit cards (in case one is
problematic.)
Next week, I will discuss physical boot camp for eligibles-
techniques to get you sexy for your dates.

meh that's pretty demanding. I rather go out with girls that don't wear makeup have t-shirts they bought in walmart . I hate girls that only have the hobbies of "shopping and hanging out with friends". There's nothing they build upon day after day except their closet. First impressions may be important in business meetings, but if they are in first dates it's going to be a pretty superficial relationship. Both should have come together due to common interests. What if I am in college or graduate school and I have no money?! Thrift store?! Reply...

Dear Michael,
You know, these days there are so many great stores like GAP or Banana Republic with nice made clothes for anyone on a budget. You can score great deals with their sales too. If you are into the vintage look, I would certainly suggest hitting a good vintage place (maybe in the Haight district of SF) for a cool t-shirt to pair with a blazer and jeans. Kind of a retro/hip look. Definitely my piece above is not for everyone, as the brands are pricey. You can easily copy what I mentioned above and hit GAP or BR. They too have the blazers, pants, and loafers.
Hope this helps

Really helpful Amy! I was just thinking back to days when I was in college. I love BR and they often have great deals/sales. Reply...

Lots of nuggest in here. My question is do you pick sock color based on the shoes or the pants? When is it okay to wear a sock lighter in color than either. And how does Letterman get away with wearing white socks with a suit? Reply...

Dear Stewie ;),
Hmmm good questions here. I would pick sock color based on the color of the shoes. So khaki plans and black shoes, do black socks. Wear lighter socks with brown shoes. I never knew Letterman wears white socks with a suit. I guess he get's away with it cause he is well, Letterman.
by the way, many men I see wear "driver" loafters without socks. This is much more European and kind of sexy (especially in summer). It works with a nice linen suit. Reply...
