Before giving advice to you on how to take candid shots, I think I should give you my definition of a 'good' candid shot, just so we're on the same page. For me, a candid shot should convey the natural personality of the person you are shooting. No artificial aspect nor obviously posed shots. I think a photographer must have a camera prepared at all times. Note: I'm not saying these pictures I am posting are fantastic or good, but for me, taking candid (and or action) shots are far more interesting than portrait and still life. Enjoy! :)

I took this in Japan on my cell phone. Technology has made it easier for us to capture moments like this.

Picture taken by: Nicki H Though many people would argue that the composition of this photo could have been thought out more carefully, I believe the inperfect aspect of a photo is the essence of a candid shot.

You usually have to get used to interferences messing up your pictures. Luckily, we have things such as photoshop to help us overcome this problem.

A somewhat 'serious' candid shot with my friends hair interfering with the actual subjects.

Many of the candid shots I take portray inside jokes or stories relevant to the place this photo was taken.

I tend to take a lot of pictures at an event and later sort through them.

This photo was taken without anything coordinated. This photo is badly taken though because only the photographer and the people at the event would know that there a somewhat steep hill cascading between the photographer and the people. (which is why, i guess, to me, this is a funny picture)

Not the greatest shot because of the blur.

Facial expression is key.

Try different angles if you can....

Generally speaking, taking pictures of people sleeping = creepy. But sometimes you just have to....

Ah! I believe this is a candid shot I am somewhat proud of.
Expression and lighting coordinated splendidly.

I totally agree with you on your definition of a candid shot. I have several shots that I have taken that have come out unexpectedly really well. Great pictures! Reply...

Wow, this is a lot better than kicking in the bathroom door with camera in hand like I've been doing. :-) Reply...

I like your definition of what makes a good candid shot and some of these illustrate them very well, like the one of the fellow laughing and this last one. Good stuff! Reply...
