A personal perspective...
DON'T buy fruit for 4 pounds. That's 8 dollars with the exchange rate. Stick to local grown/manufactured goods.
Enjoy sunny/nice days when you can. They will be sporadic. (And fresh flowers help cheer up the general gloomy atmosphere)
Learn how to use the tube and bus system. Despite the ridiculous prices, London is huge and commuting will be your life, Also, get an oyster card, or even better, a student oyster if you are student.
Go visit Notting Hill and Portobello Market. And take pictures of interesting cars along the way.
Hang out and read/relax in little cafe's you discover.
Go to house parties with the best possible live jazz. Make friends with musicians, and maybe date them.
Make the most scrumptious meals with the cheapest ingredients.
GO to Regent's Park when it starts getting nice outside.
Go to all museums. They are just about the only things in London that are FREE!
 Watch plays/musicals
(Cell block tango from Chicago pictured)
Enjoy a few pints in a beer garden...
