"Can you please spell out your name sir"
"Sure, it is... 'M' as in Monkey, 'A' as in Ass" whatever, whatever"
I'm sure all of us run into this situation sometime or the other. Don't you think it is a little boring to use the same "monkeys" and "asses" all the time? Now here is how one can knock the brains out of the person on the other end of the phone. Use the words that start with the intended letter but pronounced totally different.
Here is a list I made.
'A' as in Aisle
'C' as in Cue
'E' as in Europe
'G' as in Gnome
'H' as in Heir
'K' as in Know
'M' as in Mnemonic
'P' as in Pneumonia
'W' as in Write
'Y' as in You
If you have any in your pocket, just throw them in!
Thanks to Adam:
"C" as in Cell
"E" as in Eight or Ephemeral
"H" as in Herb ("erb") or Hour
"K" as in Knot or Knight
"P" as in Phil
From Jason:
A as in aardvark
E as in euthinasia
H as in hors d'oeurvres
K as in knee
Q as in Qatar (pronounced cut are)
W as in Wagner (pronounced Vaw g ner)
X as in xerox
E as in ewe
J as in Juan or Jorge

Funny list! By any chance, did you get this idea from the show Monk? They had a similar joke last season. Reply...

Not really. I don't follow that show. But good to know that someone else also has a malfunctioning brain like mine :-).
I thought of this, when in school, a couple of years ago. I was basically pissed off with the phone calls saying I won a million dollars or a multiple entry pass to heaven once I die. So I decided to use this for my entertainment and started to spell my name this way. Reply...

I'm a geek, but thought of 2 more:

Wow, some of these are really hard to come up with.
Some alternatives:
"C" as in Cell
"E" as in Eight or Ephemeral
"H" as in Herb ("erb") or Hour
"K" as in Knot or Knight
"P" as in Phil.
Homophones could really throw people off, like the "sell" / "cell" or "you" / "ewe". Would be fun to have a list of these to see if you could use more than one homophone in the course of spelling your name. Reply...
