This is a recipe that has been passed down for generations in my family. It's very inexpensive and quite hearty. Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 pounds boneless round steak
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspooon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large white onion (chopped)
- 2 (15 ounce) cans stewed tomatoes
- 6 pieces of white bread
- 1/4 cup sugar
Directions: - Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Cut steak into six serving size pieces.
- Mix flour, salt and pepper onto a cutting board or other hard surface.
- Using a meat hammer, pound the flour mixture into both sides of the steak.
- Coat the bottom of a large skillet with cooking oil.
- Cook the steaks over medium heat until browned.
- Coat a 9-inch x 13-inch glass pan or a dutch oven with cooking spray.
- Place the steak and chopped onion into the pan.
- Pour tomatoes (undrained) into a large bowl.
- Tear bread into one-inch pieces and add to tomatoes.
- Add sugar to tomato mixture and stir well.
- Pour tomato mixture over the steak and onions and cover.
- Bake for 90 minutes until meat is tender.
- Serve with a side of buttered egg noodles or other pasta.
- Makes six servings.
