Highlights

  • Tenderize meat by using flour and a meat hammer.
  • Fry the steak in a large skillet.
  • Bake with other ingredients in the oven.

This is a recipe that has been passed down for generations in my family. It's very inexpensive and quite hearty.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 pounds boneless round steak
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspooon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large white onion (chopped)
  • 2  (15 ounce) cans stewed tomatoes
  • 6 pieces of white bread
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cut steak into six serving size pieces.
  • Mix flour, salt and pepper onto a cutting board or other hard surface.
  • Using a meat hammer, pound the flour mixture into both sides of the steak.
  • Coat the bottom of a large skillet with cooking oil.
  • Cook the steaks over medium heat until browned.
  • Coat a 9-inch x 13-inch glass pan or a dutch oven with cooking spray.
  • Place the steak and chopped onion into the pan.
  • Pour tomatoes (undrained) into a large bowl.
  • Tear bread into one-inch pieces and add to tomatoes.
  • Add sugar to tomato mixture and stir well.
  • Pour tomato mixture over the steak and onions and cover.
  • Bake for 90 minutes until meat is tender.
  • Serve with a side of buttered egg noodles or other pasta.
  • Makes six servings.
