Hello,KidGuru here todays tutorial will show you how to speed up your Windows XP PC preformance from a slow pc to a fast efficent PC.
1. Use MSCONFIG - Disable Services and Star-ups= Start Menu > Run>Msconfig>Service/Start-up Tab/ Disable uneeded services and start ups.
NOTE: Be Careful When Tampering with MSCONFIG
A list of Services that are safe to be unchecked
The following lists services you can probably do without. Of course,
if you recognize one that you use such as Windows Messenger or Telnet,
don’t turn it off.
Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Error Reporting Service (if you don’t want to be asked to send error reports to Microsoft anymore)
Fast User Switching
Human Interface Access Devices
IPSEC Services
Messenger
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Portable Media Serial Number
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry
Routing & Remote Access
Secondary Logon
Server
SSDP Discovery Service
Telnet
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Upload Manager
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Workstation
Pick one from the list and double-click it. You’ll see a drop-down
menu next to “Startup type” that is currently set to Automatic.
Change it to Manual and click OK. This way the service will start only if it’s needed, not all the time.
Uncheck Start-Up Programs that you don't need at start-up
2. Open Programs Quicker with Prefetch- Right Click a Program >Properties> Target Box > At the end of the Link for exp. "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" > Hit Space and add the code /Prefetch:1
it should look something like this = "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /prefetch:1 this should speed up program opening by prefetching the program.
3. Remove Uneeded Programs- Add/Remove Programs> Remove Uneeded> Also click windows components > uncheck uneeded components like "MSN Explorer"
4. A Small but Classic Tip to improve speed- Switch to Classic View by not using a fancy theme windows will have less memory used up and easier to access stuff = Right Click Desktop > Properties> Themes Tab (Already there by default) > Switch Theme to Windows Classic to get a extra space on your cpu usage.
5. Run Virus Scanner /Get a Virus Scanner- Getting rid of small or big viruses as well as spam malware or whatever will increase greatly the preformance of you PC and will make it safer and more efficent to use
I reccomend any of these scanners AVG =http://free.grisoft.com/ - Free or if you want to Pay pro version
Sygate Personal Firewall- http://www.download.com/3000-2092_4-10637565.html
ClamWin- http://www.clamwin.com/
also search up - Antivirus,Peer Guardian (for P2P networks Exp= Limewire,360 share,frostwire etc)
6. Reg The Edit- Reg Edit or Registry Editor has alot of useful tips to speed up your PC heres a couple
How to get to it Start Menut> Run>Reg edit
NOTE: DON'T TAMPER WITH OTHER THINGS IN REGEDIT AS IT CAN EFFECT YOUR PC
Speed Up Shutdown -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
Change the value of ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0.
Close the Registry, and restart your computer. Whenever you turn off XP
from now on, the paging file won't be cleared, and you should be able
to shut down more quickly.
Speed Up IE Browser-HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Internet Settings
Look for MaxConnectionsPerServer
If not there right click add new D-Word Value enter MaxConnectionsPerServer then right click modify and select Decimal and set it to 10.
Speed Up Menu Delay-
-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Control Panel
- Click “Desktop.” A list of entries will appear on the right side.
- Double-click “MenuShowDelay” and change the Value data to 0
- Restat PC to See difference
7. Delete Temp Files- The Temporary files that are saved on your computer pile up and take alot of space to access these and delete them simpily
Start Menu> Run> %Temp%> Delete all of it's contents = Yes it's safe there only temporary files that sometimes delete at shutdown or restart but not all is gone so double check and delete daily.
8. Speed up Windows Explorer- For Folder Searching theres sometimes a delay cause of network and printer searching this is how to disable it
Control Panel> Folder Options> Views Tab> uncheck automatically search for network folders and printers
9. Optomize your Windows XP Settings for Best Preformance- Go to
Control Panel>System> Advanced Tab >Preformance Settings >Check Adjust for Best preformance> This will undo some minor graphic features but if your not satisfied you can leave these ones on and manually uncheck the rest
You can leave these on if your not satisifed with graphics features and still have good preformance
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons
10. Disable the Indexing Service- If you know your way around the computer and don't use your search feature much then heres how to only DISABLE IT -You can always re-able it
Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> Windows Components Tab > Uncheck Indexing Service
Last Tip: Delete or take out Fonts- Most programs use fonts like Windows Explorer and Microsoft Programs to delte or set aside out of C:Disk this is how
Control Panel>Fonts>Click to preview fonts >Either Move to a folder Exp. Unused Fonts folder in my documents you can just make it or somwere else > or for better preformance delete the fonts like wingdings and espically the ones with (Truetype) written in the name.

oh god. I am SO sorry ... I clicked the thumbs down thing up there.. I thought it would show me what people said who rated this poorly! Now I can't get it to undo it! My computer is messed up and I didn't want to go into msconfig without getting some background.. which is how I found this article!! The only reason I wanted to look at the thumbs down thing.. is because if there was something negative in there that would pertain to my OS, I would want to know... as not all PCs are the same and what's good for one, may not be good for mine. If I could do it over, I would rate this a thumbs UP!!! sorry for the misunderstanding!!

A lot of these are good tips, but things like prefetching might have the opposite effect you're looking for. If you set programs to prefetch, your computer startup will actually slow down.
Also, in Windows Vista your most commonly used programs are automatically prefetched in the background so it's pointless to use it there Reply...
