Defending your computer is very important protecting it for longer life , for safe documents etc. Anti-Virus Software and firewalls are very important and I'll suggest some programs and software tips to help protect your computer. Now there are primary virus protection programs though they do cost $$$ though they are mostly worth it. Companys like
-Synamatec
-Norton
- Mcafee
-Windows Firewall
etc.
Now also for Macs and OS X yes there are less recurring viruses for macs though this dosen't mean that you don't need a anti-virus program there are viruses still and growing but you can buy virus protection programs that are compatible with macs but then again there is a alternative that we all love.
OPENSOURCE - For macs there is a program called
ClamXav- www.clamxav.com A great Anti-Virus protection program though not a firewall
Windows- I highly reccomend
AVG Griftsoft Free or Pro Version- The Free gets it done but for more options and protection Pro is your thing though it cost some $$$. AVG is a great open source virus protection center
AVG- free.grisoft.com
Clamwin- www.clamwin.com
Comodo- http://www.comodo.com/
Sygate- A Great Personal Firewall and alternative to Windows Firewall- http://www.download.com/3000-2092_4-10637565.html
P2P Network Protection- Peer Guardian -sourceforge.net/projects/peerguardian/
Heres a Wiki Page for more programs some even cross platfrom with Linux|Windows|Mac
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_antivirus_software
Check it out and read up on the programs
Also try out - www.download.com and search virus protection categories
Now back to company brand protection hey, opensource is great theres no problem but if your paranoid and actually want sufficent protection you gotta budget money and buy one you like whatever it is and you can still run like AVG on the side.
The Ups to being Virus Protected
- Your Documents/Files are secure
- Your Computer itself is safe and more secure as well as better performance with it being clean
- You have betterchance of not being hacked etc
The Downs?
- Well there are really no downs rather than you have to buy the company branded ones or pro versions for better protection
- You have to take space downloading the protection program THOUGH IT'S WORTH IT
Internet Protection
Now Internet protection as well is very important it can also give you viruses and malware spyware all of the stuff.Either way Internet Protection is important. So when surfing the net and download many of things of the net and some one or even on messengers prompt you too download files like (This also links to P2P Networks)
Watch out for these files
- Bat.Files
-VBS.Files
mainly pay attention to the 3 letters after the file make sure its not something unknown and common like MP3,AVI are fine but pay attention to others espically Bat files that are used to send lots of spam etc.
Again when surfing the net pay attention to odd files and careful even though Zip files are common try not to download programs over P2P networks Limewire/E-Mule/360 share etc. cause these zips can include viruses as well.
Now for IE users - Download a Pop-Up Blocker if one wasnt presetted in ur IE this will get rid of those annoying pop-ups and making surfing the net more Efficent.
Firefox users- I highly reccomend the add-on Ad Block Plus for great pop-up blocking and other things that keep you safe. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
Opera Users and Other Browsers- Look for compatible Blockers etc or take advantage of ones already pre installed with your browser.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also be aware of new viruses that are feeding on the net there are many ways you can use google alert or even charts sites that have the latest news on viruses and the causes you can do to prevent your computer from getting them.
If you do get infected make sure to back-up all important files/Documents needed to whatever device I suggest a External Drive they work great for back-up also be sure to know what virus you may have common big ones like
Trojans
Worms
and categories like
Spyware
Adware
Malware
just so you can be more knowledge of what you have and how to get rid of it and prevent next time.
So overall pay attention to what your downloading/Browsing or whatever it is
* Keep up to date with new viruses and when checking unkown emails don't open unkown Attachments try scanning it as well.
Make sure your computer is up-to date and let these tips get your computer to be more safe secure and efficent these tips will help you learn how to better defend your computer.
I hope you enjoyed this Guide/Tips on better defending your computer again pay attention closley and a little will go a long way.

Free at last, free at last, thank you linux, I'm free at last. Open Source is the way to go. Even if you don't feel ready to jump the matrix, DO NOT use IE - you are begging for trouble. That's my 2 cents' worth. Forget about Norton's vs. Macafee all fingers in the dike - paying into a system designed to bilk you for protection from the unsafe O/S....I'm not even a geek and I did it.. just ask.
