  • Heard of asshole, but don't know how to play?
  • Tired of playing beer pong at parties?
  • Wanna learn a new game?

This time around, we're going to learn how to play Asshole. This is the king of drinking games. You're going to need a deck of cards (2 if there are a lot of people playing) and your choice of drink.

Start by having someone shuffle the cards and deal them out. For the first round only, the person with the 3 of Clubs, plays it and goes first. Here's how you play, first with the cards of importance:

2 - This is a clear. It can be played on any card(s) and clears the stack. The person playing the 2 gets to play again. 2's can only be played one at a time.

4 - Social. This can be played on any card(s). Everyone drinks and it is the next persons turn. 4's can only be played one at a time.

Aces - Some people play this as a Waterfall or you can choose to play it as high card. If you decided to use ace as waterfall, everyone starts drinking. You can't quit drinking until the person to your left puts their drink down. So the person playing the ace quits first, then the person to his left and so on. If ace is a waterfall, you can only play one at a time.

The first person leads with the 3 of clubs. You want to get rid of your low cards first, but you can play anything you want, as long as its higher or equal to the previous card played. If you play the same card(s) as the one(s) on the top of the pile, then the next person is skipped and they have to drink. So, the first person plays 3 of clubs, the second person plays a 3 of hearts, the third player is skipped and its the fourth players turn.

You can also play doubles, triples and quadruples, so be sure you don't break any of them up. Any double beats any single, any triple beats any double, etc. Likewise, double 8's beat double 5's.

If you can't beat or clear or play a social on the card(s) played, you drink and are skipped. If no one can clear or beat that card, the stack is cleared and the person who played those cards goes again.

You play until everyone is out of cards. Make sure you keep track what order you go out in. After everyone is out of cards, you change seats.

President - The first person to go out is the President and they can choose whatever seat they want. The President also makes a rule that will stay in effect for as long as they are president. If you're President three times in a row, you'll have three rules in effect. When your presidency is over, all your rules end.

Asshole - The person to go out last is the Asshole, they sit to the right of the President. The Asshole, shuffles and deals the cards. They also have to clear the cards whenever the stack needs clearing. If someone calls a clock, the Asshole drinks once for every second it takes them to cler the cards. However, while the Asshole is dealing, they can make anyone at the table drink.

Everyone else sits in the order they went out after the President. You can make anyone that is below you drink. So the President can make everyone drink and the Asshole cannot make anyone drink (after the cards are dealt).

During the following round, the President goes first and can play any card they want. You play until everyone is out of cards, then switch seats again.

This might be kind of confusing, so I'll show a quick demo for a four player game:

Player 1 plays 3 of clubs

Player 2 plays 3 of hearts

Player 3 skipped

Player 4 plays 3 of diamonds

Player 1 skipped

Player 2 plays 5 of spades

Player 3 plays 7 of hearts

Player 4 plays King of Clubs

Player 1 plays double 5's

Player 2 plays a 2, clears, then plays 6 of hearts

Player 3 plays 10 of diamonds

Player 4 plays double 7's

Player 1 plays a 4

Player 2 can't play and drinks

Player 3 plays a 2, clears, then plays....

Get the hang of it a little better? If you play with two decks, the same rules apply, but you'll have more double, triples and can even have 5,6,7 or 8 of a kind. Usually when 2 decks are used, we'll throw a joker in for the first round to determine who goes first.

Have fun and be safe. Don't drink and drive!
