At no time do I mean to offend anyone by this, nor do I mean to offend FASHION as we know it, but I need to get this off my chest.
I go to college at your average public college in New Jersey and just recently the weather has drastically cooled off to the point where if you sneezed outside, I'm almost positive that the fluids you're excreting will freeze and fall to the ground. However, with the decreasing temperatures and my increase of layers of clothing, I have noticed that a lot of the girls on my campus seem almost unaffected.
Prior to the arrival of winter, the high fashion was these leggings and uggs and what I like to consider pregnancy shirts (you know, the ones with the empire waist and excessively too much fabric below) . And now that snow has covered the ground, what are the majority of the women wearing? THE SAME DAMN THING.
Now I have danced ballet since I was 3 years old, so I am very familiar with tights, and own a pair of boots (with the fuzzy lining) myself that I do confess to wearing when the temperature is below 32. So tell me...how on earth are these girls not freezing their asses off when they go outside for their hourly cigarette in those outfits?
This all brings me to my second point about this so-called fashion statement. Why on earth does 90% of the girls on my campus feel that they have to wear these ridiculous outfits? I mean, what the heck happened to fashion being an expression of individuality? Granted, the stores are selling these articals of clothing like nobody's business, but do we all really need to rush out to our local Target and stock up on as many different colors of tights as we can find? I am so tired of all these girls wearing these tights and these pregnancy shirts, and worse yet, when their leggings are short (just below the knees) and then they wear their ankle-high Uggs and one of those "marshmellow" jackets with who knows what underneath...
Ladies, if you're reading this and you don't want to smack me for finally opening my mouth, PLEASE HAVE SOME SENSE OF SELF. We do not all need to dress as if we're going to put on the 21st century's rendition of Swan Lake at any moment.

You know, I understand what you are saying. Like Rebel1 said, there really is a broader topic about what individuality means. Even when I was in high school and college, the "surfers" dressed about the same, so did the "hippies" (so called non-conformists yet weren't they simply conforming to their own dress code?), the "bikers", the "Gen X bikers" (you seem them out on clean bikes in brand new Harley-Davidson wear). With Britney Spears, there was the look with the open midriff and belly jewel thing. Do people who do ballet have a certain dress and air? How about those who love startups over large corporations? Over time (like as I got older), I realized some people have a need to belong, to identify with something. And sometimes they, just as an individual, happen to like a certain look or thing, even if others do too. Who is to say who is right and who is wrong. So long as they are all happy and don't impose those values on others. Reply...

I have to totally agree with your view point only from a male point of view. The same thing occurs with male fashion; I have found my own style that in no way replicates the masses. I hope to write a piece on individuality myself which will include the fashion topic. Nonetheless, we all are fortunate to live in a free country where we have a golden opportunity to expess ourself instead of playing sheep. I wrote a reply on the article from 'Focusinstyle' dated November 6, 2007 that you may want to check out. Anyway, stick by your guns and be an INDIVIDUAL while being proud of it. Reply...
