Japan is a very cool place once you get beyond the cultural stereotypes. They have the best variety and changing types of candies, in all the places I've visited in the world. (But I do have a bias to Japan). The fads that come and go have been really fascinating, and made millionaires out of those who capitalized on the fad while they lasted. Most people know about flower arrangements, as well as the importance of presentation with its meals (yes, even sashimi and sushi). But there's more... Japan likes all things "cute". Like Hello Kitty. Like in its cartoons. In school, everyone is encouraged to be artistic. I don't know if I could say the same about schools in the US. Where could all this lead? Did your mom ever pack you one of these for school lunch?

Kawaii!
What if kids get attached to these lunch creatures? Wouldn't want to eat a friend for lunch. Reply...

And I thought putting smiley faces with maple syrup on a pancake for my kids was creative. These are great! Reply...

Hi there, it's you-know-who. Thanks a lot. I showed the pictures to our nanny....I am sure she's glad that the twins are still eating Gerber baby food for lunch. I think she might make those lunches for the master (a.k.a. Adam) for now :) Reply...

Uh oh, caught! So much for being sneaky & devious. I'm sure Adam will like Gerber for lunch, especially if creatively prepared. BTW, we used to have fun making our own baby food fresh with a Cuisinart hand blender. Maybe a nice birthday gift for the other who! Reply...

I've been staring at those lunch pics since I came across them (someone sent them to my wife in an email, and we both just loved them). Japan definitely knows how to do "cute". I actually don't think many of the lunches are that complicated to do. For instance, with some cooking shears or a knife, and some imagination, a wiener becomes a shrimp or octopus. Sometimes creativity is simply seeing something a slightly different way. Reply...
