Kismet - The open source tool of choice for wireless hackers
Audacity - A very powerful, open source sound editor/mixer
FireBug - A Firefox plugin which allows you to dissect the actions of forms, and other things on a web page
Mirc - A Windows based Internet Relay Chat client. IRC was the predecessor to modern day chat rooms.
VmWare - Allows you to build virtual servers and load/run other operating systems in a window. For instance, you could create 5 separate Windows servers on a single Linux server....but why would you ever want to do that? :)
Any software not developed by MicroSloth or other greedy corporations! Reply...

Kismet is awesome, I still haven't figured out how to get it so it will help me determine what ip address is the gateway.
When I was working at a security company a while back we had vmware running all sorts of windows instances through linux. I think they were being used to track what exactly spyware did to a computer when they would get installed. We'd throw the diff of the files into a database and move on to the next one. Pretty useful stuff. Reply...

screen is pretty cool too, it's this terminal program that you can start when you connect to a server. After that it runs forever so you can always get back to your last state of affairs on any server. You can also have other people attach to your screen sessions so you can both watch (and interact with) the same output. Props go out to David for showing me it, now I just need to remember to run it. Reply...

gpsbabel - Converts GPS file formats and get data off your GPS device, if you're using this you're probably using mac or linux so you're already a bit geeky, but with the added geekiness of being a GPS geek.
musicbrainz picard - Allows you to automatically tag and organise your music. Using picard means you probably have an otherwise unmanageably large music collection, that probably means you're a geek.
vim/emacs - Terminal text editors. To save a file and exit vim you press [ESC]:wq[ENTER] and to type you have to go into "insert mode", that has to be pretty geeky.
any irc client - irc is where geeks go to chat, any irc client is geeky, double points for terminal based ones.
I have to agree with several other suggestions especially synergy, firebug, vmware, lynx and nmap. Reply...

It's also how we access our home computers from school. Just set it up, get a domain forward like ones from no-ip.info and you can get around any blacklist filter. Reply...

I forgot my favorite productivity app for windows, launchy! (http://www.launchy.net/)
It let's you open up any program you want without bothering with icons or the start menu. Just press alt-space and type the first few letters of a program name then enter. It can also preaddress an email, work with iTunes, and more! It's almost as good as quicksilver for the mac Reply...

1) Lynx, if you use this text-only web browser, you know you're a geek. Warning, only hardcore nerds need apply
2) Gmail Notifier - If you're so attached to your inbox that you have to know the second an email arrives, this is for you
3) Peer Guardian 2 - This program blocks spying eyes at the government level from seeing your dowloads that may, or may not, be completely legal. If you use this, you are either a geek, or you had a geek install it for you
4) Synergy - This program allows you to use one set of mice across two or more computers PC or Mac. If you have two or more computers right next to each other, you're most likely a geek Reply...
