First, watch the YouTube Video below to learn how to record sound from your computer speakers.  You can stop when he starts talking about using the Windows Sound Recorder program.

Note, the Windows Sound Recorder he proposes only lets you record 60

seconds.  Instead, download Audacity - which is free open source

software (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) and use it to record while

you play the youtube video.

In order to save the recording as an MP3, you'll have to

download a separate .dll file and point Audacity to it on your machine.

 Instructions are here:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3

I have found this to be most useful when tracking down old, out of print, or never even released music tracks that you can't find on any legitimate download services (for example, Marvin Gaye's rendition of the National Anthem at the 1983 NBA All Star Game.)  If only the record labels would get a clue - totally missing an opportunity here.

Nice - great stuff. I've used audacity to make ring tones by taking snippets of songs. This is another great use. Reply...
