Studying abroad can be a very rewarding experience, but choosing the right program is usually fairly difficult. There are thousands of programs throughout the country catered to different students' needs, which makes the process of selecting a program very confusing. For example, some programs are intended for students that want to travel to many places and explore several countries or even continents; other programs are intended for people that are hoping to work on their language skills and want to immerse themselves in another culture. There are many great options, but it is important to first think about what you want to get out of your experience abroad!

How to Choose the Right Study Abroad Program for YOU:

1. The first step that you should take in finding the perfect study abroad program for you is talk to your school’s study abroad counselor.
He/she will probably be the most useful resource on this matter. Your
counselor will provide you will an abundance of information about many
options and will help to start to figure out what exactly you are
looking for. You may want to ask questions like: How can I continue to
pursue my major while studying abroad? Can I study in a country where
I don’t know the native language? How long can I study abroad for?
Can I do more than one program? Hopefully, your counselor will be very
educated about the programs at your school and help you along your path
to the perfect abroad program.

2. If none of the
programs that your counselor presented to you seem interesting, you
should use the internet to explore the many other programs that are
available to you.

3. First
choose a region (city or country). Do you want to learn a completely
new language and educate yourself about an entirely different culture?
Do you want to practice a language that you already know? You should
select several programs in the region that you are interested in to
research further.

4.
After you gather together several different options you should schedule
another appointment with your school's counselor. Your counselor will
be able to tell you which programs will be accepted by your school.
You can always select a program that has not been approved by school,
but it may be hard for you to get academic credit or financial aid for
your time spent abroad.

5.
Another important issue that may influence your decision is the cost of
the program. The varying prices of different programs are dependent on
many factors (like how long you will be abroad, where the program is
located, where you will be living etc.). Although it seems like the
cost of a program may play a very important role in your
decision-making process, don’t eliminate any of your options for
financial reasons. Many programs usually offer scholarships or
financial aid to certain candidates.

6. Look for reviews
and feedback on the programs that you are considering. Talk to
students that have studied abroad in previous years to determine which
programs have been successful. You may also want to talk to your
language teacher to see what he/she thinks about your linguistic
skills. Your teachers may also be able to recommend some programs
designed for people who have the same language proficiency as you.

7.
Along with discussing your options with your school counselor, you
should also talk to your family and friends. (They know you the best
and will probably be able to tell which program or place will make you
the happiest.)

8. Make sure to consider everyone else’s input, but ultimately the most important thing is what YOU want. Good luck with your decision!
