Let’s take a little trip back in time:

February 14th, 2007 A.K.A. V-Day

I always seem to have a hard time when it comes to picking out that
Valentine’s Day gift for that special lady. It shouldn’t be that big
of a deal. When it comes to shopping, I have no problem shopping on a
budget or spending more than I should. Either way, I get it done. And
when it comes to Valentine’s Day gifts, they’re not exactly in short
supply around the Valentine’s season.

The main problem is that I’m just too picky.

When it comes to shopping for myself, it’s easy. I buy the cheapest
loaf of bread. I buy the body soap that smells the best. I buy the
tool that does the job. If there’s more than one to choose from, I pick
the one with the longest warranty (Craftsman).

Shopping for gifts for other occasions, such as Christmas, is easy
enough. Gramma gets perfume. Grampa gets an electronic device with
larger buttons to replace the old one. Mom gets a coffee mug. Sister
gets a book. Brother gets ammo, DVD’s that feature things exploding, or
anything that can cause damage or inflict pain. Then buy an extra one
for Dad. Friends get friendship, or maybe even a phone call.

But what do I get for her on a day set aside
especially for her? Screw this one up, and you’ll be browsing Match.com
again soon. So it’s got to be perfect. Therefore, I ponder that perfect
gift for way too long. Before I know it, the big day is here, and I’ve
got nothing to give her. So I haul buns over to the grocery store and
buy the last rose (you know the one; it’s the one with the browning
petals for $85.99) and a box of Sweethearts.

After waiting in line for an hour to buy the ****iest and last
remaining flower on the planet, I haul buns back home. Of course,
coming home an hour and a half after saying “I’m going to go check the
mail right quick,” on Valentine’s Day doesn’t bode well for any man
looking to remain out of the single’s pool.

At least I’ve got a browning rose and a $0.60 box of candy to make it all better!

Fast-forward 24 hours.

February 15th, 2007

Updated my Myspace profile to read “single.”

Fast forward about a year.

February 13th, 2008

Well, at this point I’ve entered into a new relationship. This time,
I’m going to do it right. I’ve already put off getting my special
someone that special gift for too long. Fortunately for me, I’ve had a
revelation. Most girls like to get flowers, candy, jewelery, gift
baskets, teddy bears , or anything sweet and romantic. The “perfect
gift” is something sweet (and at least a little nice, and not rotting).
A half-dozen long stemmed roses and a box of chocolates ought to do the
trick. Since I’m short on time, I decide to buy the gifts online. They’re shipped same day, and on V-Day, I present my gifts to my lovely lady over a candlelit homemade spaghetti dinner.

February 15th, 2008

Still in a relationship, and she still loves me!

Fast forward to present day.

For our 1st Valentine’s Day together as husband and wife, I’m going to follow the same basic formula that worked well enough to win her over last year, with a few minor adjustments.

Since learning that she doesn’t actually like chocolate, I’ve decided to order a teddy bear and a bunch of balloons
to replace the candy. We’ll do gifts over a homemade candlelight
dinner, although I’ll be making changes to the menu this year, and
probably be spending a bit longer in the kitchen. But after everything
winds down for the evening, I know it will all be worth it.
